Don’t Neglect The Ceiling

When most of us think about ceilings for our home, the things that may come to mind are white and flat. The ceiling, referred to as the fifth wall in design circles, is often an overlooked element when decorating, yet, can make a tremendous impact when thoughtfully incorporated into your home décor. It’s often a missed opportunity.

Don’t worry, things are officially looking up! Here are a few different ways to dress up a fifth wall.

Paint

This is the most budget friendly option. Nothing is more boring than a white ceiling but in some rooms a traditional white ceiling is just the right color. Painting your ceiling a different color adds a special touch of excitement and can dress up any space. Think of it this way: any salad is always better with dressing!

Wallpaper

It’s a way of injecting visual interest and patterns without overwhelming the room. Find a pattern that speaks to similar designs found in your upholstery, pillows or rugs. Wallpapering the ceiling with the texture of linen or faux bois design can create a sense of coziness. You can do something that really draws the eye up in the space.

Crown Molding

It’s a great way to add texture. It goes a long way in achieving old-house charm. Crown molding gives the eye a place to rest.

Exposed Beams

Leave exposed beams natural, paint them in a contrasting color or paint them the same color as your fifth wall for architectural interest. Add non-structural support beams to your ceiling and bring in a timeless and historical appeal.

Tray Ceilings or Coffered Ceilings

The impression of a more spacious interior with a modern look can be created using tray ceilings. It works best for homes with higher ceilings and can bring in a fresh perspective. A coffered ceiling can create a sense of height and airy feeling while giving it an old English charm that so many designers and home owners dream about.

If you’ve ever felt like the walls are closing in on you, don’t forget to look up! Consider the fifth wall in your next renovation project.
